Two women with the same name, born in two different times on two different lands, but sharing the same blood. Both creative visionaries of their time, determined to make dreams come true and influence the world through cloth and cut. Ivy “Coco” Maurice is carrying on the namesake and legacy of her maternal grandmother. She is doing so through The House of Ivy, a clothing line that was first created in the 1970’s and now reborn through the tradition of family, faith and fashion. Ivy says fashion has been ingrained in her since she was a child spending summers in Jamaica with her Grandy. She believes her gifts were passed down to her and it is her job to let those gifts shine and flourish.
During the pandemic Ivy began to see pivots in the lives of others and she was inspired to pivot in her own life. “I had something to prove to myself, and that was starting a business that was fully funded by me.” She says pivoting was not just her saying yes to her dreams, but being her dreams. She had a few creative side hustles in college, but this business is a first for her, with it being a spiritual, creative, financial, and emotional investment. She is grateful to have the support of her parents.
Many of the designs in her clothing line are inspired by her childhood. She shares that she looks at old pictures from times before and combines them with current fashion styles. “The outfits that I’ve seen from the 70’s when my grandmothers started the line, I’ve always gravitated to that era of the 70’s and the energy of Jamaica during that time. The House of Ivy is born from that era but with a modern twist.” She is looking to tell a story through fabric and is doing so by combining her West Indian and West African ancestry (continued in full article).
